Ep. 3 - Talking about mental health

Claudia Talamantez

RADIO & TV PERSONALITY

“It’s not talked about. It seems like if you are depressed or have certain things of mental health It's iust like 'estas loco!’.” - Claudia Talamantez, Radio/TV Personality

When Claudia Talamantez began her career as a radio/tv host 15 years ago, there weren’t many women, hispanics, or teenage moms in the industry. Her story starts at a dry cleaners where she shared her love for radio with a stranger. That conversation would be the start of a very successful career as a bilingual personality.

Claudia shares with me that her success didn’t come without its share of hardships and trauma. In the midst of juggling her career, motherhood, and loss… she found herself battling depression. Through her journey, Claudia has witnessed that many in the Hispanic/Latinx community lack information and awareness surrounding mental health and do not recognize the symptoms of these conditions or know where to seek help.

According to NAMI, only 35.1% of Hispanic/Latinx adults with mental illness receive treatment each year compared to the U.S. average of 46.2%. This is due to many unique barriers to care.

Claudia has been working to bring awareness to the real risks associated with mental health issues in addition to elevating latin voices throughout Texas.
